Liz Worndl’s journey from dental school to MasterChef Canada

Next Gen of the Month is a monthly Q&A with a dental student or new dentist where we ask them about their experiences and accomplishments thus far in their dentistry journey. This month we are featuring Liz Worndl, a U of T dentistry graduate, practicing dentist, and recent finalist on MasterChef Canada. Liz brings the same discipline and passion to the kitchen that she brings to her dental career.

Do you have a favourite memory from dental school?

My favourite part of dental school was the amazing people I met. Dental school is hard, and going through that experience alone is far too much pressure for anyone. I formed incredible, lifelong connections with my classmates by working together as a team and supporting one another through the challenges. Those relationships truly shaped my dental school experience and remain some of my best friendships today.

You recently appeared on the reality TV show MasterChef Canada. Congratulations! What inspired you to apply?

Thank you! I’ve always loved cooking. I learned when I was young from my mom and grandmother, and funny enough, I actually wanted to be a chef growing up. While I ultimately pursued a career in dentistry, my love for cooking never faded—rather, it became a creative outlet for me. I was never quite ready to let that food dream go and even started my first food blog while I was in dental school. I have very fond memories of cooking for and with my classmates as a way to de-stress during school.

Once I had settled into my dental career and found my rhythm, I came across the MasterChef casting call online. Stepping away from work is never easy, but I knew I’d regret not trying. I’m so glad I took that leap of faith, and I was incredibly grateful for the support of my colleagues throughout the process.

How would you describe your experience on the show?

Interestingly, my experience on MasterChef wasn’t all that different from dental school. Once I found out I was cast, I had very little time to prepare. There was a lot of studying, memorization, and preparation in the early mornings and late nights, all while trying to meet a demanding work schedule. Once filming began, the days were long, the pressure was intense, and expectations were high. Despite that, the experience was extremely rewarding. I became very close with the other contestants through our shared challenges, and we supported one another through some incredibly demanding moments.

How did you discover your love of cooking?

Cooking has always been part of my life. From learning in the kitchen with my mom and grandmother to using food as a way to connect with others, it’s something that has always brought me joy. Over time, it evolved into a creative outlet and a way for me to recharge, especially during stressful periods like dental school.

Do you have any advice for future dental graduates?

Dentistry is a fantastic career, and you’re on a strong path toward success. It’s fulfilling, challenging, and rewarding, but it can also be stressful and high pressure. If you internalize all of that stress, there’s a high chance of burning out. For me, having passions and hobbies outside of dentistry is essential. Staying engaged with my personal life through cooking, spending time with family, and seeing friends helps me show up more energized and focused at work.

How do you find time to balance your passion for dentistry and cooking?

Balance is always the goal, but it doesn’t come easily. There were times when I was at work thinking about recipes, or in the kitchen feeling creatively blocked because I was overwhelmed by work stress. Over time, I’ve learned that having both passions actually makes me better at each. When I’m at work, I try to give it my full attention so I can leave feeling proud and fulfilled, which makes it easier to fully enjoy time in the kitchen afterward.
