In County Cork, Ireland, where rugged coastlines meet colourful seaside homes and centuries-old charm beckons, a new chapter awaits Carina Almario. Currently an office administrator at Ottawa Dentistry, Almario is preparing for a life-changing academic transition that will take her across the Atlantic this September to pursue her dream of becoming a dentist at University College Cork (UCC).
From front desk to dental school
The path to dentistry was not straightforward for Almario, who graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Biomedical Sciences before discovering her passion for oral healthcare.
“After exploring different healthcare fields, including working as a pharmacy assistant, I was drawn to dentistry because it perfectly integrates both science and manual dexterity,” says Almario, who developed her fine motor skills through years of painting.
What truly convinced her was a pivotal moment in 2022, when she shadowed at Ottawa Dentistry and witnessed procedures like root canals and extractions. The seamless teamwork and the immediate impact on patient wellbeing captivated her. She discovered that a career in dentistry offered something unique—the ability to alleviate discomfort with a single visit, while serving as a reassuring healthcare provider who promotes overall wellbeing.

The Irish advantage
Seeking opportunities beyond Canada’s limited dental school spots, Almario discovered a promising alternative through Atlantic Bridge, a program that helps North American students pursue medical and dental education in Ireland.
“The city of Cork is very quaint and charming, making it easy to explore just by foot,” Almario explains. Known as Ireland’s food capital, Cork offers much to discover, from beautiful architecture, historic castles, scenic beaches, to the famous English Market.
But it’s the academic structure at UCC that really appeals to Carina. With smaller class sizes of 45-60 students, the program offers a gradual progression from didactic coursework to simulation labs and eventually to managing patients. “Though my initial plan to study in Canada didn’t work out, I’ve realized this challenge may be more rewarding in also satisfying my love for travel and desire for personal growth.”
Cork, Ireland’s second-largest city, is home to one of Europe’s most respected dental schools. The university’s international reputation for excellence attracts students from around the globe, creating a diverse learning environment. The dental program emphasizes clinical experience early in the curriculum, with a comprehensive five-year program that prepares graduates for practice in multiple countries, including Canada, thanks to reciprocity agreements.
Building on professional foundations
Almario’s experience working within the Dentalcorp network has provided valuable insights into dental practice that many students lack when beginning their education.
“At Ottawa Dentistry, I have gained incredible experience working in the dental field as a front desk administrator,” Almario reflects. “The administrative experience has proven invaluable, from submitting insurance claims and processing referrals to mastering scheduling management.”
Her learning extended beyond daily operations. Attending the Capital Dental Symposium in February connected her with other dental professionals and introduced her to emerging technologies. These experiences have given her perspectives that other dental students may not have when entering their programs.
“Learning the business side of dentistry has made me more confident about becoming a well-rounded dental professional in the future,” she notes.
This foundation in the administrative side of dentistry will complement the clinical training she’ll receive in Ireland, positioning her for a comprehensive understanding of dental practice upon graduation.
A culture of growth and advancement
Almario’s journey represents the type of career progression that a larger network can help foster.
“We believe in creating pathways for our team members to reach their full potential,” says Joe Farra, VP of Dentist Recruitment at Dentalcorp. “We’re committed to supporting clinicians at every stage of their careers, whether that means providing continuing education through DC Institute, offering mentorship opportunities, or enabling leadership through Path to Partnership opportunities.”
Farra sees Almario’s academic pursuit as emblematic of the organization’s philosophy on professional development. “Her transition from administrative team member to future dentist showcases exactly the kind of career mobility and growth we strive to make possible across our network.”
This investment in professional development has become a cornerstone of Dentalcorp’s approach to building its team of dental professionals across Canada.
Bringing global expertise home
While Almario’s immediate future lies across the Atlantic, her connection to Canada’s dental community remains strong. Upon completion of her dental education in Ireland, she plans to return to Canada to begin her career as a dentist.
“I plan on returning to Canada to practice as an associate for 2-3 years to gain experience as a general practitioner,” Almario shares. Her vision extends beyond general practice, with possibilities of owning a clinic or specializing in orthodontics or prosthodontics one day.
For Dentalcorp, welcoming back professionals like Almario represents an opportunity to enrich their network of 570+ practices with globally trained practitioners.
“We’re always excited to welcome back team members who have broadened their skills and perspectives through diverse educational pathways,” Farra adds. “The international experience and training Carina will gain through her studies in Ireland will bring fresh insight to our practice environment when she returns to Canada.”
As Almario prepares for her European adventure this fall, her story serves as inspiration for other dental professionals considering further education and career advancement. The charming streets of Cork and the distinguished halls of UCC await, ready to transform this ambitious Canadian office administrator into a globally trained dentist, backed by a professional network that values growth, innovation, and excellence in dental care.
