Dr. Damilola Edun reflects on challenges as a foreign-trained dentist in Canada and shares advice for others

Next Gen of the Month is a monthly Q&A with a dental student or new dentist where we ask them about their experiences and accomplishments thus far in their dentistry journeyThis month we are featuring Dr. Damilola Edun, a foreign-trained dentist and content creator, who hopes to inspire and guide other dentists.

Why did you decide to pursue dentistry?

Dentistry is a fulfilling career that combines the joy of serving others with the freedom of creative expression.

Favourite memory from dental school?

One of my favorite memories from dental school was the first time I completed a challenging procedure on a patient. The sense of accomplishment I felt when I saw the patient’s smile and gratitude was overwhelming. It was a moment that reaffirmed my passion for dentistry and the impact it can have on someone’s life

You came to Canada as a foreign-trained dentist. Can you tell us about this experience?

Coming to Canada as a foreign-trained dentist is a journey filled with challenges, growth, and, ultimately, fulfillment. The decision to practice in Canada stems from the country’s excellent healthcare system, high standards of dental practice, continuous learning, and the opportunity for a better quality of life. Canada also has a reputation as a welcoming, diverse country.

The process typically begins with the recognition of foreign dental credentials. It involves either taking the National Dental Examining Board (NDEB) exams, which assess your knowledge and skills to ensure they meet Canadian standards, or enrollment in an International Dentist Program for 2-3 years. Navigating this process can be challenging, not just academically, but also emotionally and financially.

The sense of accomplishment after obtaining licensure and starting to practice in Canada is profound.

Advice for future dental graduates or other foreign-trained dentists in Canada?

Pace yourself, set out realistic goals before you embark on your journey, and keep going.

You post inspiring and educational content on social media. Why did you start creating content online and what message are you hoping to share?

I initially began sharing my journey to inspire and guide pre-dental students and foreign-trained dentists, hoping to offer them the insights I wish I had during my own experience. My goal was to help them avoid the mistakes I made and find a clearer path forward. As a practising dentist now, I’ve expanded my focus to include daily oral health tips, ensuring that everyone stays informed and motivated to take care of their oral health.
