I’m Duane Baluke, and for over 50 years, I’ve poured my heart and soul into dentistry, building Baluke Dental Studios into a cornerstone of precision in Canada. This is our story; it reflects a journey from a kid tinkering in my dad’s lab to leading one of Canada’s most cutting-edge laboratories, passed from my father to me, and now to my son.
The Past: Rooted In Early Dental Technology, Family, and Grit
At 11, I accompanied my father, Walter Baluke Sr., to Shaw Dental Laboratory, co-founded with Archie Shaw in 1949. My first job was coating copper bands with silver nitrate—a high-tech process for crown and bridge impressions before rubber base changed the game.
Long weekends at Shaw I absorbed all the different techniques in the model department to be proficient. Downstairs, Louie Kline mentored me on lab materials, while I spent free moments waxing crowns, setting dentures, and bending wires—playful experiments that sparked a lifelong passion. High school pulled me away, but I anxiously returned as a delivery driver after getting my drivers license. My father dreamed I’d become a dentist, but that path wasn’t for me. I went to university but later pivoted and earned my RDT at George Brown College. When my dad sold Shaw, he, my brother, and I launched Dental Ceramics of Canada, growing it to 175 technicians. My father’s sudden passing and a broken handshake agreement cost us the lab. Undaunted, we started Baltor Dental Studios, reclaimed our name—Baluke Dental Studios—three years later, and built a 6,000-square-foot facility near Highway 7 and 404. Once surrounded by horse farms, it’s now the heart of northern Toronto’s bustling core.
The Present: Partners in Precision
Today, Baluke is a trusted ally for dentists and labs, delivering state-of-the-art technologies and staying ahead with top-tier workflows and products. We’re not just a lab; we’re your Partners in Precision, fusing time-honored craftsmanship with modern innovation for precise, stunning results. My son Tyler, a George Brown graduate with top honors, carries the family torch alongside lab manager Scott Kosmack, a vital team member. My brother Walter (Skip) has passed, but his spirit endures in our work.
The Future: Shaping Tomorrow
The future inspires me. Tyler and Scott will lead Baluke to new heights, focusing on precise restorations and revitalizing cosmetic dentistry. We’re diving deeper into digital dentistry—expanding 3D printing, mastering All-on-X digital workflows, and further expanding our technologies in each department of our full-service lab. In a dental market where DSOs are persuading treatment plans and materials to use, we are sticking to our family roots, grounded by our lab ethos which is to deliver the best possible care, prosthesis, and appliances for the patient. Myself, Tyler, and Scott will keep Baluke a top tier Canadian lab, innovating while staying true to our heritage.
