Insurance for Implants? It’s Still Merely a Dream!

Dr. Nicolucci is president of the Canadian Society of Oral Implantology and Oral Health's implantology board member.

In the spring of 1984, I was actively negotiating with insurance companies to have dental implants considered a covered treatment under their plans, and to this day it is still not a reality for the general population. This is not an acceptable situation. Initially, the major excuse used by the insurance companies (to counter the … Read more

Radiographic Interpretation of Infected Primary Molar Teeth

FIGURE 1--Periapical radiograph tooth 74: radiograph elongated, poor diagnostic quality, apparent distal carious lesion and furcal radiolucency.

By Keith Titley BDS, MScD, FRCD(C), Mark Merryfield DMD, Howard Stein BSc, DDS, MEd. Infected primary molar teeth display radiographic bony changes that are different from those of permanent molars.1 Typically the infection is the result of caries progressing towards the pulp with consequent necrosis and abscess formation. In permanent teeth the infection spreads though … Read more

Bonded Endodontic Obturation: Another Quantum Leap Forward for Endodontics

FIGURES 22-28--BACK FILLING. Applicator tips for the Obtura II system are available in sizes #20, #23, and #25 gauges. Additional root canal sealer may be placed in the coronal aspect of the root canal with a hand file prior to back filling. 4-6 mm aliquots of RealSeal are injected into the canal space then immediately condensed with the pre-fitted Schilder or Buchanan hand pluggers in sequence using the sequentially larger pluggers as the coronal aspect of the canal is approached. As thermosoftened RealSeal is deposited in the canal, backpressure is produced and the applicator is forcibly extruded from the canal space. It is essential that the operator continue injecting as the applicator tip is retrieved from the canal in order to avoid inadvertent removal of the newly deposited RealSeal mass prior to condensation.

The surgical operating microscope and the advent of rotary nickel titanium instrumentation have both provided a quantum leap forward towards a higher standard of endodontics. Adhesion has done much the same for restorative dentistry. Blending the best of adhesion into endodontic obturation has now become reality. In the authors’ opinion, adhesion in canal obturation represents … Read more

Pre-Implant Bone Manipulation for the General Practitioner

FIGURE 41--Implants have been placed without complication into the newly formed bone/graft material where they were intended to be from the prosthetic design.

In a great many of the cases that cross my desk for implant consultation, the teeth that are going to be replaced with implants have either: 1. been missing for a substantial period of time, or 2. have recently been extracted by a ‘what ever it takes’ style of dentistry in which the labial bone … Read more

I read with dismay the misinformation in Dr. Jordan Soll’s column. I would encourage Dr. Soll or anyone with an interest in AACD policy and issues to contact the AACD office before speculating about the Academy’s policies. I have been Executive Director for just under two years. Nowhere in the policies or literature of AACD … Read more

Your Practice Plan: A Living Document

The general assumption used to be (and perhaps still is) that written business plans were for people just starting out in business or for those seeking a bank loan or investment. However, the standard business plan has evolved. It’s become a living document that grows with the business over the years. A detailed yet concise document in your practice is an important tool for measuring your growth and your goals.

Hunting Where the Ducks Live

When I ask dentists what they believe marketing to be, they usually respond with one word, advertising. Advertising is certainly a component of marketing but it is not marketing. Advertising, says The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, is “any material related to your practice which is published, displayed, distributed, or used, whether by … Read more

Risk Management – Disability Insurance: Your Buying Definitions

Most Canadians don’t protect themselves against the loss of their earning power. This year, one in eight working Canadians will become disabled for more than three months and half of these individuals will be disabled for more than three years. Usually when one is asked “what is their most valuable asset?” The responses are their … Read more

Nutrition The New Frontier

The importance of nutrition to dental health has been common knowledge for a long time. Several studies demonstrate this close correlation and highlight the circuitous relationship between malnutrition, infectious disease (such as periodontal disease), and the immune system. Infections promote malnutrition and malnutrition elicits auto-immune dysfunction; this impaired immunity, in turn, intensifies the infectious disease.1 … Read more
