The why: Background story
In the heart of Nanaimo, B.C., one of Canada’s fastest growing cities, an exciting new dental venture has taken shape. Dr. Rebecca Booker and Dr. Aaron Cooper are a husband-and-wife team that met on their first day of dental school back in 2001. They opened their first practice in 2005, expanding it from 4 to 13 operatories. Along the way they met Dr. Wilston Mutagubya, an outstanding associate whose passion for technology and excellent patient care made him the perfect partner for opening their second practice. In November 2024, Long Lake Dental opened its doors, providing a high-tech space designed for delivering a full range of dental services as well as comprehensive care to their growing community. From Invisalign to implant dentistry and atraumatic surgical extractions, they have built a state-of-the-art practice that combines technology with caring human touch service.

The how: Strategic project planning
Faced with high patient demand and a rapidly growing population, the trio decided to become partners and open a new practice close by. They found a vacant 4500 sq/ft former party supply store located just a few streets away on a busy corner with plenty of parking. Initially the space seemed too large but recalling the rapid growth of their first clinic, they took the leap. The rent was attractively low with double the space at almost half the cost. Construction kicked off in April 2024. Despite detailed planning, surprises were inevitable. When the contractor broke through the concrete floor, they discovered a massive boulder right where plumbing for the restrooms would go. This unexpected find forced a complete redesign of the drainage system, leading to an 8-month delay for re-permitting. Ultimately, this experience reminded them that even with careful preparation, construction projects must be flexible and adaptable and prepared for surprises.

The results: Technical design features
Long Lake Dental captures the seaside charm and heritage of Nanaimo into a modern aesthetic and coastal inspired design. Shiplap ceilings, soft neutral tones, and curved walls create a warm, inviting atmosphere while ensuring a smooth patient flow. The result is a bright, airy space that feels sophisticated and welcoming. Through smart planning, the practice optimizes every square foot, expanding from the initially planned 15 operatories to 16 operatories. They seamlessly integrated three restrooms, a spacious lobby with digital charging stations, and ample storage areas. Every detail was planned with patient experience and workflow in mind. Open operatory spaces foster a balance between privacy and easy access, while streamlined administrative spaces enhance efficiency. By thoughtfully balancing beauty and functionality, the practice exemplifies how thoughtful design can blend patient comfort with operational excellence in a modern dental practice.

The impact: Practice success & community impact
At Long Lake Dental, innovation is a central part of the overall patient experience. The practice is equipped with CBCT imaging, 3D printers, and AI-powered diagnostic tools making treatments even more precise and efficient. Voice activated software streamlines note taking and AI-driven x-ray analysis helps catch issues early, improving patient care. The reception room is designed with comfort in mind, featuring a Keurig machine for enjoying a tasty beverage as a welcoming touch upon arrival to the practice. Beyond technology, it’s their sense of community that truly makes this office special. The team embraces Nanaimo’s small-town spirit by building deep healthcare relationships and giving back through local initiatives. Now with their expansive new space, the team is ready to embrace the future of dentistry by serving a welcoming, high-tech experience where patients feel well cared for and deeply valued.
