Independent dental hygienist Heather Wolframe offers advice for others starting their own business

Hygiene Spotlight features an exceptional dental hygienist every month. This month, we are showcasing Heather Wolframe, RDH, HIAOMT. Heather has over 15 years of clinical experience and runs Myofunctional Therapy Thunder Bay where she helps patients thrive in overall health and wellness by assessing and addressing myofunctional concerns.

Why did you decide to pursue dental hygiene as a career?

I decided to pursue dental hygiene as a career because I was very drawn to the medical field in my high school years and fascinated with biology. The meticulousness of clinical instrumentation is also right up my alley, being a perfectionist by nature.

Do you have a favourite patient success story?

To be honest, I could never pick just one. The biggest success is when a patient looks at me and tells me I’ve changed their life. I think it also must be said that the patient is the one who puts in day-to-day commitment for their success. Yes, I’ve helped them and guided them with their individual functional needs, but their hard work must also be highlighted in their success. It takes dedication from both sides to reach patient-centered goals.

What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?

My son. I gave birth to my son while I was pursuing post-secondary education and he’s been my driving force to succeed in my pursuits – to be able to provide and be the best mom and example I can be for him.

Advice for other dental hygienists starting their own business?

I would advise them to do research before taking this step. There’s a lot to consider in terms of structuring a business and administrative aspects that can be a little overwhelming. Gaining this knowledge and insight before starting will prevent errors that can be avoided. I would also advise talking with other independent dental hygienists who are working in the focused area you’re interested in; for example, mobile services, myofunctional therapy, etc. An excellent resource that helped me was joining the Independent Practice Network (IPN) with the CDHA, where there’s access to see previous and current posts and discuss with all independent dental hygienists across Canada.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love being outside. It’s an excellent way to decompress and helps regulate my nervous system. I enjoy gardening, hiking, and biking. During our cold winter months, I dabble with watercolour and gouache painting. A good conversation with a hot cup of tea is always welcome!

What is your favourite tv show or movie and why?

Downton Abbey. I absolutely love the period of time it’s set in and could listen to their witty banter all day long!
