The why: Background story
Dentistry at the Kingsway is an entrepreneurial story of expansion driven by a desire to create greater accessibility to care for patients in Etobicoke. Seven years ago, Dr. Rahul Shah acquired a young practice located on the second floor of a historic building. While it quickly became home to a loyal patient base, the lack of elevator access posed accessibility concerns, particularly for seniors and those with mobility challenges. Dr. Shah recently acquired an existing ground floor long-standing practice just two minutes away. This new space featured here was thoughtfully renovated not only to ensure accessibility but to also create a modern and welcoming environment for patients to enjoy. By breathing new life into a local neighbourhood practice, Dr. Shah has expanded his reach while preserving the trust and continuity of care his patients value most. This new practice represents the natural next chapter in his entrepreneurial journey to deliver community centred dentistry.

The how: Strategic project planning
With seven operatories running well in the first location, purchasing a second practice felt like a natural step. The opportunity came when Dr. Shah found a clinic just down the road, right across from a high “pedestrian traffic” subway station. It offered exactly what he was looking for: main floor entry, free parking, and a familiar neighbourhood setting. Around that same time, he attended a “Building Your Dream Practice” seminar where a piece of advice stood out: bring your design team in early. Prior to receiving the keys, they were already sketching out creative design floor plan options. The detailed preparations paid off. With the layout, technology, and workflow upgrades clearly mapped out, construction could proceed more predictably and smoothly. Renovations were spread out over approximately 8 months. They were done room by room and often on weekends. This kept patient care and cashflow uninterrupted while the practice grew into its new identity.

The results: Technical design features
The newly renovated 900-square-foot three-operatory practice was designed to feel calm and inviting. Dr. Shah drew inspiration from Turkish Airlines airport lounges who are known for their warm lighting, rounded corners, and relaxed sophistication. Rich walnut accents, soft curves, and a palette of earthy tones give the space a grounded, peaceful vibe while still looking sharp and professional. Going fully digital was a big step forward; paper charts and old cabinetry were replaced with clean, efficient digital workspaces. What’s interesting is that no internal walls were moved; the design team reimagined the layout by converting the reception area into a more comfortable lounge that feels inviting while minimizing larger construction options. Small changes made a huge difference. The space now feels fresh, functional, and genuinely uplifting for patients and team members.

The outcome: Practice success & community impact
Dentistry at the Kingsway has become known as a place where modern dentistry meets genuine care. The space reflects Dr. Shah’s commitment to providing advanced comprehensive services in an environment that feels comfortable and welcoming to all. Community involvement has always been at the heart of his philosophy. From delivering pro bono care to people in need to sponsoring school oral health days, the practice enjoys giving back in meaningful ways. For Dr. Shah, a dental practice is not only about clinical treatment; it’s also about being a space where all generations can feel truly at home. This journey is a great example that successful renovations stem from a clear vision, early creative planning, and the right partnerships. By engaging design and other expertise early and keeping the patient experience front and centre, long standing clinics can evolve into more modern and thriving spaces that serve their community high quality dental care for years to come.
