A total of 2,000 endodontic and restorative procedures were completed from June 1 to 7 in remote Amazonian communities in Brazil, thanks to advanced digital dentistry, including intraoral scanning and same-day prosthetic fabrication.

The expedition was organized by North Carolina-based Dentsply Sirona in partnership with Brazilian non-governmental organization Project 32, and brought advanced oral health treatments to residents of Rolim de Moura do Guaporé—a remote municipality in Rondônia state, northern Brazil, with a population of more than 55,000.

“By using advanced techniques and high-performance technologies, we’re able to deliver exceptional care that is efficient for everyone involved,” said Dr. Manoel Eduardo de Lima Machado, founder of Project 32.

“The dentistry we practise is exactly what should be accessible to everyone, whether they are in the public or private healthcare system,” he added.

‘Powerful example’

“Our latest expedition is a powerful example of how digital technologies are advancing care in remote areas and increasing access to oral health care,” said Andrea Frohning, senior vice-president and chief human resources officer at Dentsply Sirona.

Of the 20 dentists who participated, 10 joined remotely from their own clinics using DS Core, Dentsply Sirona’s cloud-based platform. The virtual team received and reviewed intraoral scans in real time, providing diagnoses and treatment recommendations without the need to travel. This remote support expanded clinical capacity while minimizing environmental impact.

Frohning said the initiative supports the company’s goal of creating 25 million healthy smiles by the end of 2025.

To date, Dentsply Sirona and Project 32’s partnership, established in 2013, has enabled more than 30,000 advanced dental procedures in underserved communities across Brazil.

The global digital dentistry market is projected to grow significantly, reaching US$17.2 billion by 2032, driven by technological advances and rising demand for cosmetic procedures. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 10.6 per cent from 2024 to 2032, according to SNS Insider.
