PerioMonitor, a testing kit designed to detect oral inflammation, received Health Canada approval on Feb. 5, 2025.

It was developed under the supervision of Dr. Michael Glogauer, Professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry, Dentist-in-Chief at University Health Network, and Head of Dental Oncology at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The cost-effective and user-friendly PerioMonitor helps dental professionals quickly assess and monitor oral inflammation.

Dr. Glogauer said the kit will enable early intervention and ultimately improve patient health outcomes.

The kit received Class III approval from Health Canada, which designates high-risk devices requiring a Medical Device Licence (MDL) application with clinical trial data. Examples include glucose monitors and pacemakers.

How it works

According to the makers of PerioMonitor, the kit uses a simple colorimetric approach based on oral neutrophil enzymatic activity. Patients rinse with a 10-mL solution for 30 seconds, then expectorate into a test container. A test strip is dipped into the sample, and within a minute, a colour change from clear to purple indicates inflammation levels, which are compared to a reference chart for interpretation.

The kit was developed by Quebec-based company Oral Science.
